Have you heard about Calais? This city, located in northern France is a major ferry port and a main connection between France and England. Every few minutes ferries come and go from Britain to France and vice versa.
Calais faces Dover (34km. distance by sea), the nearest point in the English channel. This french city is a very important trading and transport center with England. Aside from this, Calais is also famous for its fishing port and fish market.
The old city of Calais is on an artificial island, which is surrounded by a lot of canals and harbours. The new part is modern with a lot of shops, restaurants, clubs and hairdressers. The church of Notre-Dame in the heart of the city is its main symbol.
You might be surprised by the long, wide and really beautiful beaches of Calais. You can walk for hours on the fine, white sand or just relax when the weather is warm. What you have to mind though is the high tide in the afternoon. The sea comes really close to the rocks and you might be in a situation where you can not go back the way.
